“A brilliant light burned all around him, the lake itself like a fiery flame.” The story of Beowulf is of a hero saving innocent people from monsters by killing them. Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic; it is a story about heroism, honor, glory, goodness and the fight against evil. The hero of the story is warrior Beowulf. Beowulf has to fight three evil monsters throughout his life in the story. Beowulf, the hero and main character of the story had to fight a giant monster, Grendel with his bare hands, Grendel’s mother with a giant’s sword, and a fire-breathing dragon. He is the strongest amongst all men. His fuel for fighting these monsters is the unending thirst for glory; glory he could die for, glory that a lord seeks. His heroic …show more content…
The lake is home to Grendel’s mom. Lakes provide fresh water, an essential to life, and Grendel’s mom represents evil and misery. Lakes are also susceptible storms of mystery. This setting contradicts with the location, raising the question, why would Grendel’s mom live in an area that supports life? Grendel’s mom lives in the murky lake because she knows who Beowulf is, she is aware of the act that Beowulf is the almighty, and she is the opposite, the devil, or the evil. She is hiding in the one place Beowulf wouldn’t expect her to be at, the center of life. She is merely protecting herself by living in the lake thinking she can delay or evade her end, death by Beowulf. She thinks by living amongst innocents, god’s burning light will be ducked and she won’t be burnt. She was wrong though, Beowulf is smart, he tracked her footsteps back to her lake, and he knows her plans. Therefore, he dives into the lake to kill her. He dives into the lake for four hours, another miracle from the divine. Beowulf’s need to kill Grendel’s mom is complicated by the fact that she is burning the innocents by her fiery radiation. Grendel’s mom takes Beowulf midst someone’s battle hall. She has Beowulf in her grasp, surrounded by other sea-monsters, and yet she isn’t able to harm Beowulf in any way.
