Even though hemp is not marijuana and could not be used for its psychoactive qualities, or therapeutic purposes industrial hemp should be legal in Canada for its many beneficial uses; industrial hemp is a multi-purpose crop that is environmentally friendly and would be a sustainable resource in Canada’s economy. Hemp and all the products made from it are in fact legal in Canada. There are no laws in Canada or in the USA for that matter that states possession of hemp is illegal. This would include all hemp seed oil, sterilized seeds, seed flour, seed cakes, shelled seeds, hemp hearts, hemp clothing’s, fabrics, and fuels, basically anything produced from industrial hemp is legal to have in your possession (source 1).
Marijuana is in fact illegal in Canada though; and because of this it’s not so potent cousin Hemp is having troubles blooming in Canada’s economy. Canada’s hemp industry is only small right not but has the potential to grow like a weed. So what’s the difference? Well both hemp and marijuana do grow from the same plant called Cannabis sativa, which is a diverse plant species with over 500 different varieties so although they are produced from the same plant they are referred to as distinctly different “cousins”. Only major difference is that hemp contains little to none of the THC compound found in Marijuana (source 2 need footnote).
