The use of hemp can date back to 8000 BCE dating back to over 10,000 years ago used for pottery, “In siberia charred seeds have been found in burial mounds dating back to 3000 B.C. The Chinese were using cannabis as a medicine thousands of years ago” (NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC 2015 JUNE). Ganja is American too, so American in fact, that George Washington grew a hemp farm at Mount Vernon. For a majority of America 's history marijuana was legal. So what made it illegal? In 1906 the drug was labeled as a poison and states made laws prohibiting the drug. Around the 1930’s, marijuana became illegal in every state, then came “reefer madness” in the 1970’s the federal government labeled the drug in the same category as heroin. That it is dangerous, has no medical advantages, and a high potential for overdose or abuse. Scientist would not study cannabis because they were marked as criminals by definition. Luckily, more and more people are becoming open to marijuana and the benefits that are surprising us that are found in this forbidden miraculous plant. The harmful impacts of prohibition keeps running from squandering assets to demolish lives. Our police commit a large number of hours to capturing, booking and detaining cannabis smokers, a large portion of whom are generally honest. The most sad of these arrests have spent over 10 years in jail, at times in vain more than ownership of cannabis for individual use. “There were 658,000 arrests for marijuana possession in 2012, according…
