MARIJUANA SHOULD BE LEGALIZED IN THE UNITED STATES The United States government is one “of the people, for the people, and by the people” according to the U.S. Constitution. (Lincoln). American citizens are proud of their government as well as their country‘s justice system that is considered one of the most progressive in the world. The United States has been described as “an ‘empire of liberty’, a ‘shining’ city on a hill,’ the ‘last best hope of Earth’ and the ‘indispensable nation’” (Walt). However, “[high-profile] implementation failures, such as the rollout of the Affordable Care Act’s federal exchange website, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s response to Hurricane Katrina, or the management of the Vietnam War are ingrained in the minds of many Americans” but not all (Hudak). The citizens of America, i.e., “the leader of the free world" (Walt) could change their minds if they knew their government kept failing. In 1920, the U.S. Congress ratified an Amendment for alcohol prohibition that later “proved difficult to enforce and failed to have the intended effect of eliminating crime and other social problems” (History Channel). The 18th Amendment prohibited “the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors.” This law failed to get rid of crime and other social problems; “to the contrary, it led to a rise in organized crime, as the bootlegging of alcohol became an ever-more lucrative operation.” (History Channel).…
