The United States of America has faced the issue of marijuana use since its inception and has struggled over the legality, regulation, and enforcement of this controversial drug. Marijuana, commonly known as cannabis or weed, is a psychoactive drug that can be entered into the body through forms of digestion or smoking and can alter one’s mental state. Marijuana has maintained its existence for over two thousand years, originating from China and integrating its way throughout the early world for recreational purposes. Even in the 17th century, medical patents contained marijuana and continued to be an acceptable form of medication until the 1940 's .Recent research has also contributed to the debate in the medical and health benefits that accompany the using of cannabis, uncovering the true risks and rewards of its effects on the body.. Several states and territories have legalized its medical use yet only a few have allowed the sale and consumption of recreational operations despite it being the most commonly used illegal narcotic and shift towards being more socially acceptable compared to previous decades. When debating over the legality of marijuana, governments consider the both sides of the argument; The gains of legalizing cannabis such as revenue, medical benefits, and wiser use of government resources are challenged with the dangerous side effects of health concerns, accidents, and influencing more harmful decisions.
