Legalizing Marijuana
Bill Hicks once said, “Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit…unnatural?”(Good-reads). So why is marijuana illegal if it is a crop that naturally grows on Earth? Although there is much skepticism about the legalization of marijuana, countries and states that have already legalized it are shutting down these concerns. Marijuana legalization is beneficial for economic growth because of personal, medicinal, and industrial use.
Marijuana first spread from China to India and Europe as early as A.D. 500, according to History.com. In the mid 1500s, the Spanish brought marijuana to the New World and by the mid 1900s, the United States listed it as a Schedule One drug along with heroin and LSD. Now, marijuana has been legalized in two states and will appear on the ballot this year in twelve more (“History”). There are many different names that have been given to marijuana such as: cannabis, weed, dope, pot, hash, and ganja. Teenagers and drug dealers usually refer to marijuana with these names. The main active ingredients in cannabis are called cannaboids. There are sixty known cannaboids and each one has a different effect on the body. The most common cannaboid is known as THC. THC is present in both types of cannabis. The first is called Indica and it creates a feeling of sedation and pain relief. It is best for late night use and usually prescribed to patients who suffer from constant pain. The second type is called Sativa and it…
