Marijuana has been legalized for medical use in 24 states including Colorado, California, and Oregon. In these states, citizens have been able to purchase, consume, and benefit from the marijuana medically. Medical marijuana is provided to these patients through dispensaries with a prescription provided by the doctor. Medical marijuana should be legalized in The United States of America because it has many health benefits including treating glaucoma, epilepsy, and chemotherapy patients. Because of its medical use, marijuana should also be reclassified from a schedule 1 drug to a schedule 2 drug.
To fully understand the medical advantages of marijuana, you must first understand what marijuana is. Marijuana is a mixture of dried and shredded leaves and flowers of a cannabis plant. There are many different nicknames for marijuana including weed, bud, loud, grass, reefer, or ganja. The active ingredient in marijuana is delta 9 - tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. This high has many effects on your body. Because THC is a cannabinoid, when absorbed by the body it disrupts the endocannabinoid system functioning. In the endocannabinoid system, the THC attaches to two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2. the CB1 receptors are found in the brain and control the body’s movement, as well as the brain’s memory.
