For many years Marijuana has been identified as a menace by the United States Government. They have exaggerated claims of its harmfulness and they have ignored its potential as a useful medicine. Marijuana already has a well established reputation in the medical field and legalization of Marijuana would allow for it to help many people (Marijuana Prohibition). Marijuana has been proven to be an effective medicine and Marijuana legalization would help improve the economy. There would also be a lower crime rate with a lot less people in jail. Overall, legalizing marijuana would be most beneficial for the United States.
The legalization of Marijuana has been an issue in the United States for over 100 years. After the Mexican revolution of 1910 there were many Mexican-Americans who mainly found work on large farms in American fields. These immigrants smoked Marijuana on a regular basis. Strong prejudice against the immigrants caused many people to view Marijuana as an addictive and violent-inducing drug that created criminals, murderers and delinquents. California passed the first law banning Marijuana in 1913. Other states followed, including Wyoming in 1915, Texas in 1919, and Nebraska in 1927. An overall prohibition began in the 1930s (History of Marijuana). Since then, several states have legalized Marijuana for medical use and as of 2016 Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington state and Washington, D.C. have legalized Marijuana for recreational use.
