Cannabis – Legalize It?
Since the 1930 's marijuana has been illegal in the United States, and though disparaging claims have been made towards it, the truths are beginning to surface. There are now 23 states, and the District of Columbia who have legalized its use for medical purposes. So, should marijuana be legalized for both medicinal and recreational use, and is it as bad as society makes it out to be? U.S. citizens are asking questions and doing research for them-selves, and finding the medical benefits of marijuana and increased revenue for states to be poaitive. Although I do not indulge in its consumption, I believe that prohibition does more harm than good, and should be legalized.
Why is marijuana illegal in the first place? To answer this, it is important to go back to the early 1900’s. The unfortunate reality for its banned status comes from a history of racial propaganda that claimed men of color became violent and solicited sex from white women while under the influence of marijuana, which lead to the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 making it illegal to grow (all strands including hemp, the non psychoactive gender). The company DuPont also had a large role in this legislation. They had recently developed synthetic fibers and hemp fiber was their number one competition. Up to this point all ropes, rigging and sales, paper, and countless other products were made from hemp fibers. Even George Washington grew hemp for its amazing properties.
