Marijuana is one of the most used recreational drugs in the United States of America. It can be consumed in ways such as eating, smoking or pill form. Marijuana has been argued about for many years in the United States. In 1937, the United States declared possession and use of marijuana be illegal. Due to the law that marijuana has become illegal, there have been many cases where using the drug leads to some serious legal consequences. In 2008 alone, hundreds of millions of people in the United States were using illegal drugs; between 123 and 203 million were using marijuana (Armentano). There is a lot of research that has proved that marijuana is not addictive, even though there is almost an equal number who believe marijuana can be addictive. Marijuana usage in the United States has become a pandemic. Marijuana should be legalized for reasons such as to keep people who do not need to be in drug treatments out of drug treatments and jail. Therefore, the United States is better off legalizing a plant that is naturally grown and that is already apart of many people’s everyday life. One out of three adults admit that they have once or still smoke marijuana (Armentano). What some people may not know is that there are many addictive drugs available that consumers can take more advantage of and also not suffer for any criminal consequences because they are legal.
