Legalizing Marijuana As of Tuesday, November 9th, 2012, Colorado and Washington legalized the use of Marijuana (pot). Allen St. Pierre, the executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws states, "These two states are the only places on the face of the Earth that have actually put the imprimatur of the state on legalization of cannabis.”
Elsewhere, marijuana law is either decriminalized, ignored, or convoluted. But Washington and Colorado have now completely legalized the possession and use of marijuana for all adults and all purposes. The substance is still illegal for use according to the Federal Law, and cannot be used legally by anyone under the age of 21. Many people don’t know that Marijuana can be used for health benefits:
- Marijuana can be used to treat a common eye disease, Glaucoma. Glaucoma causes excessive pressure to the eyeball - causing blurred and loss of vision, and damaging the optic nerve (transmitting impulses to the brain from the retina at the back of the eye). Marijuana can slow down the effects of the disease, and may prevent blindness.
- Marijuana might also be able to help reverse the carcinogenic effects of tobacco and improve lung health. According to the American Medical Association in January 2012, marijuana does not impair lung function and can even increase lung capacity.
