Cannabis legalization was something of a myth 20 years ago, but as the world is adapting to and making cannabis legal is it not time for Canada to do so as well? According to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, a drug is considered to be a chemical substance that alters the structure or function of a living organism. In Canada it is an offence to posses one single cannabis cigarette(joint) and for a first-time summary conviction offence the punishment is a fine of up to $1000 and/or six months imprisonment. Cannabis has been an illegal drug since it was added to the Confidential Restricted list in 1923 under the Narcotics Drug Act Amendment Bill after a conference about a “new” drug in the House of Commons on April 23rd, 1923. Today cannabis is still an illegal drug, but many people, including Liberal party leader Justin Trudeau believe that the legalization of cannabis would help Canada economically and this can be seen in Colorado and Oregon. Since the legalization in Colorado they have made more than 53 million dollars in tax revenue. According to Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman, he believes that“ It is the stupidest law possible, just legalize it and tax it like we do liquor.” along with Morgan Freeman is billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson and he believes that “ The work that could be done with the taxes from legal cannabis could have have incredibly positive impact.” (15 powerful people who think cannabis should be legalized) The federal government must…
